As a Microsoft Windows administrator, you can use\u00a0Google Update<\/strong>\u00a0to manage how your users’ Chrome browser and Chrome apps are updated. You can manage Google Update settings using the Group Policy Management Editor.<\/p>\n

You can see the values of Google Update policies set for a computer in the Chrome policy list at\u00a0chrome:\/\/policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: Only domain-joined or MDM-managed computers honor policies set for the computer by Group Policy. Therefore, you must ensure that all your devices are joined to a Windows domain controller or Microsoft Entra ID domain, or are MDM-managed.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Install Google Update<\/h2>\n

<\/a>Get the Google Update policy template<\/div>\n
\n
\n

Use an administrative template to install and define policies for Google Update. Microsoft Windows 7 and later supports both ADM and ADMX templates. Download the appropriate Google Update policy template for your Windows network:<\/p>\n

Microsoft Windows Vista and later<\/h4>\n
    \n
  1. Download and unzip the\u00a0administrative template XML-based (ADMX)<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Open the\u00a0GoogleUpdateAdmx<\/strong>\u00a0folder.<\/li>\n
  3. Copy\u00a0google.admx<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0GoogleUpdate.admx<\/strong>\u00a0and put them in your\u00a0Policy Definitions<\/strong>\u00a0folder. (Example: C:\\Windows\\PolicyDefinitions)<\/li>\n
  4. In the GoogleUpdateAdmx\/en-US folder, copy the\u00a0google.adml<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0GoogleUpdate.adml<\/strong>\u00a0files and put them in the\u00a0en-US<\/strong>\u00a0folder in Policy Definitions. (Example: C:\\Windows\\PolicyDefinitions\\en-US)<\/li>\n
  5. Open Group Policy and go to\u00a0Computer Configuration<\/strong>\"andPolicies<\/strong>\"andAdministrative Template<\/strong>\"andGoogle<\/strong>\"andGoogle Update<\/strong>\u00a0to verify that the template loaded correctly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Microsoft XP<\/h4>\n

    1. Download the\u00a0administrative template (ADM)<\/a>.<\/li>\n
    2. Copy the\u00a0GoogleUpdate.adm<\/strong>\u00a0file into the\u00a0Policy Definitions<\/strong>\u00a0folder. (Example: C:\\Windows\\PolicyDefinitions)<\/li>\n

      Using Group Policy<\/h4>\n

      We recommend that you keep auto-updates turned on so that your users receive critical security fixes and new features as they become available.<\/p>\n

      In Group Policy (Computer<\/strong>\u00a0Configuration\u00a0<\/strong>folder):<\/p>\n

      1. Go to\u00a0Google<\/strong>\"andGoogle Update<\/strong>\"andApplications<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      2. Enable the\u00a0Update policy override default<\/strong>\u00a0policy.<\/li>\n
      3. Under\u00a0Options<\/strong>, choose\u00a0Allow updates (recommended)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      4. Go to\u00a0Google<\/strong>\"andGoogle Update<\/strong>\"andApplications<\/strong>\"andGoogle Chrome<\/strong>\u00a0and repeat steps 2 and 3 to make sure auto-updates are also always allowed for Chrome browser.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        You can optionally override this setting for an individual app by using the\u00a0Update policy override<\/strong>\u00a0policy in the specific app folder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

        Known Issues<\/h2>\n

        Chrome browser could fail to install due to anti-virus rules. During installation, the installer copies files to temporary directories and then moves those files to the appropriate installation folder.
