The Maildir format is well supported by Dovecot and has some advantages (no locking, allows for easy incremental back-ups and restoring of individual messages.) So you&#8217;ll need to assign a directory.<\/p>\n<p>Convention is to store mail in a <code>~\/Maildir<\/code> directory in a users home directory, but nothing prevents you from using another (hidden) directory.<\/p>\n<p>You configure both the Maildir format as well as it&#8217;s location with the postfix <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postfix.org\/postconf.5.html#home_mailbox\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">home_mailbox<\/a> setting:<\/p>\n<pre><code>sudo postconf -e \"home_mailbox = Maildir\/\"\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Which is also the default location configured for most Dovecot packages.<br \/>\nThe alternative is to configure postfix to leave local mail <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki2.dovecot.org\/LDA\/Postfix\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">delivery to Dovecot<\/a> with the Dovecot LDA or LSMTP.<\/p>\n<p>Then configure Dovecot to look for mail in the correct location as well:<\/p>\n<pre><code>mail_location = maildir:~\/Maildir\/\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>In case of mail users actually having local user accounts (instead of only existing as <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki2.dovecot.org\/VirtualUsers\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">virtual mail users<\/a>) you may want to populate <code>\/etc\/skell<\/code> with a Maildir and a welcome message for new users.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recommended is to use the Maildir directory format to store email rather than the the older mbox format.
